Weekend working on the Mersey Gateway Project
A spokesperson for the project said: “We can confirm that there was planned work taking place on Sunday morning (23 November) on both sides of the river. This was essential activity but we are sorry that some people were disturbed by the noise.
We are always keen to get feedback from local people and are constantly reviewing and refreshing our work plans to ensure that we can deliver the new bridge with minimal disruption to local people.”

Below is a copy of a letter that has been shared with Halton Councillors following the work that took place on Sunday morning.
Dear Councillors and Halton residents,
Merseylink would like to apologise for the inconvenience that the operating hours required for the project works may generate and unfortunately it appears that work may have started prior to 8.00am on Sunday 23 November.
The bridge construction team including Senior Operations Managers at Merseylink met on Monday 24th following the complaints regarding the alleged commencement of work outside those permitted on Sundays and an effective ‘toolbox talk’ has taken place to make sure that this does not happen again.
On 17 October Merseylink was given permission from HBC to work extended hours between Monday to Saturday 6am to 10pm and Sunday 8am to 6pm for the trestle and cofferdam works. These hours were approved by the Council to accommodate work needed to be done in line with tidal restrictions and in order to comply with the Environment Agency’s mitigation requirements.
This allows other construction activities as well as the restricted piling windows. Tide times and noise mitigation only allowed for this between 8am and 10am on Sunday 23 November.
Merseylink accept that working on a Sunday at this time can be disruptive and are always looking to minimise disruption.
