Over 200 businesses interested in becoming a supplier to the Mersey Gateway Project received a briefing on potential opportunities at a series of events at the Catalyst Museum in Widnes over the past week.

Council Leader Rob Polhill and members of the project team were joined by representatives from the north west branch of the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA NW) at the sessions, which were held to brief interested businesses on recent developments and likely future opportunities.

It is expected that there will be substantial subcontracting opportunities during the construction and operational phases of the £600million project.

Anyone who runs a business and who would like to find out more about future opportunities and events can register to join the Mersey Gateway potential suppliers database online at www.merseygateway.co.uk.

The project team is also urging all businesses who think they could be a potential supplier to register on The Chest – Halton Borough Council’s online procurement portal – as this will be the main channel through which significant future opportunities and work packages are published.

Cllr Rob Polhill, Leader of Halton Borough Council, said: “We have attracted worldwide interest when it comes to the three consortia who we have now shortlisted to be the main project company, but it is clear that there will be significant sub-contracting opportunities for a wide range of businesses as the project moves forward. I was delighted to see so many businesses from Halton and the wider region at the events over the past week, and am looking forward to the plans developing.”

Matthew Fearnhead from the Mersey Gateway Project team said: “We are still at a very early stage in the competitive dialogue process with the main bidders, so these events were a chance for us to hear from potential suppliers and to give a broad outline of the plans and likely opportunities moving forward.”

Roger Morgan, from CECA NW, said: “Mersey Gateway is a very important project for the north west region, and I think it is important that we all work hard to do everything possible to make businesses aware of the opportunities it will bring.”
