New environmental information and guided walks at Mersey Gateway Visitor Centre in Widnes
Brand new environmental information along with a guided walk has been launched at the Mersey Gateway Visitor Centre in Widnes following the opening of the iconic new bridge.
Set up to tell the story of the Mersey Gateway, the centre now includes more information about the local environment and how Merseylink and the Mersey Gateway team, along with the unique new charity, the Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust are working to conserve and improve the natural habitat in the Upper Mersey Estuary.
Environmental information at Visitor Centre
The new environmental section includes information about the wildlife and habitats of Spike Island in Widnes and Wigg Island in Runcorn and also showcases some of the many community and educational achievements made by the combined efforts of our environmental teams during construction and beyond.
Dedicated volunteers will be on hand to lead guests through the centre and will also offer guided environmental walks along Spike Island where people can get up close and personal to the landscape and wildlife surrounding the bridge, hear about the new Mersey Gateway and what’s going on around the Island now and in the past.

The Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust is a unique independent charity which was set up in 2010, to promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the environment across a 1600-hectare area of the Upper Mersey Estuary running all the way from the Mersey Gateway Bridge up river as far as Warrington.
The Widnes visitor centre is based at the Catalyst Science Discovery Centre and is open from 10am-4pm except Monday and Wednesday.
