The Mersey Gateway Project has today (Friday 9th April) welcomed the news that Lord Adonis has written to Halton MP, Derek Twigg, stressing his party’s support for the project.

In a letter, Lord Adonis, the Labour Secretary of State for Transport, says that the party is “committed to taking forward the Mersey Gateway Bridge, which offers considerable benefits for Merseyside and Cheshire.”

Tony McDermott, Leader of Halton Borough Council and Chair of the Mersey Gateway Executive Board, welcomed the news, saying: “One of the key strengths of the project has been the regional and cross-party support it has had over its development and we will be working hard to press the case for a quick decision with whoever forms the next government.

This is an important boost for the project and confirms that Mersey Gateway is very much at the forefront of the minds of our political leaders and closely aligned with Labour Party transport policy.

“We are now looking beyond 18 May, when Parliament resumes, and are hoping to secure an early post-election decision from government that will move the project forward.

Steve Nicholson, Mersey Gateway Project Director, said:

“We welcome the support that Lord Adonis has expressed for the project today. We have worked hard to make the case for the Mersey Gateway Project and it is good to hear that this has been recognised at the highest levels.

“We are looking forward to the project being approved in time for the procurement process to commence later in the year. In the meantime, the project team are undertaking crucial preparation work so that construction can start within two years of the project receiving approval.“
