The Mersey Gateway Project is a ‘green’ project that will bring major environmental benefits to the local area, and environmental issues have been a key focus for us since the project was first developed.
The Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust (MGET) is an independent Charitable Trust set up in 2010 to promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the environment across a 1600 hectare area of the Upper Mersey Estuary running all the way from the Mersey Gateway Bridge up river as far as Warrington.
The Trust aims to create a new 28.5 hectare nature reserve around the bridge.
Vision Statement
Our vision is to promote the conservation, protection and improvement of the physical and natural environment of the Upper Mersey Estuary through monitoring and management with an emphasis on:
- Biodiversity;
- Landscape;
- Science; and
- Educational opportunities leading the area to become a place to visit, enjoy and be proud of.
Aims
The Mersey Gateway Environmental Trust is unique for a major construction project in the UK. Its aims are to:
- be the Upper Mersey Estuary’s most active and influential wildlife champion,
- ensure the Mersey Gateway Project is a visionary example of environmental management for future major construction projects,
- improve the natural environment around the bridge and through the Upper Mersey Estuary on both land and water,
- increase the bird and wildlife population of the Upper Mersey Estuary over the next 30 years, and
- secure additional funding for environmental initiatives in the area over the next 30 years.
The Trust aims to be at the heart of the Mersey Gateway project, widely respected and seen as a catalyst for change and a bridge for prosperity for Halton, Warrington and the North West and to establish an information baseline of habitat and species through monitoring in order to influence the correct management of the estuary.
