The Mersey Gateway Project

If you live outside Halton but plan to use the bridges to cross the river then there are a number of different options you can select to reduce the cost of tolls.

Both the new bridge and the existing Silver Jubilee Bridge will be tolled and the standard toll rate will be £2 per one-way trip.

If you are just travelling through Halton you will be most likely to use the new Mersey Gateway Bridge as it will have direct connections to the main regional road network, whereas the Silver Jubilee Bridge will be more for local users.

What’s the best money-saving option for people living outside Halton?
This depends on how much you cross the river. Regular users of all classes of vehicle can obtain a 5% or 10% discount if they register for a video account or sticker account respectively. Users driving cars or small vans who use the bridges very frequently will probably find it best to buy a monthly pass.
How much will the monthly pass cost?

There are two types of monthly pass.

The unlimited travel pass will cost £90 per month for unlimited travel at all times.

The off-peak pass will cost £60 per month for unlimited travel at off-peak times (between 10am to 4pm and 7pm to 7am Monday to Friday and all times on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays).

Who can buy a monthly pass?
Anyone can buy a monthly pass – you do not have to be a Halton resident to get one.
How much will I save by buying a monthly pass?

The saving will vary depending on how much you cross the bridges in Halton. For people who cross the river a lot the savings will be significant.

For example, if you cross the river an average of four times a day that adds up to 120 one-way trips over a 30-day month.

At the sticker registered toll price of £1.80 for a one-way journey this would cost £216, so buying the £90 monthly unlimited travel pass would save you £126 a month.

If you made the same number of journeys five days a week rather seven days a week the saving would be a minimum of £54 a month.

How many trips do I have to make a month to make it worthwhile buying a monthly unlimited travel pass?

If you make more than 50 one-way trips or 25 return journeys per month then it will be worth you buying a £90 monthly unlimited travel pass. If you make fewer than 50 trips in a month then the best option for you will be to register for a sticker account and pay the £1.80 toll for each trip.

How many trips do I have to make a month to make it worthwhile buying a monthly off-peak pass?
If you make more than 35 one-way trips purely at off-peak times (between 10am to 4pm and 7pm to 7am Monday to Friday and all times on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays) and very few or no journeys during peak times (between 7am to 10am and 4pm to 7pm Monday to Friday), then the £60 monthly off-peak pass might be a better option for you.
